Today on National Punctuation Day, we encourage you to break out your dog-eared copy of the AP Stylebook and correct the punctuation on everything from newspaper articles to store signs. We do ask that you please be gentle - many misguided punctuators are not aware that they are causing offense, so a kind correction will be much more welcome than wordlessly marking up their sign with red pen and handing them a copy of the appropriate page of the Stylebook.

That said, we would like to share a few of our punctuation pet peeves:

- The specifying of in-laws. It's "daughter-in-law," not "daughter in law" or "daughter in-law." Continued hyphenation is a must. Also, the plural is "daughters-in-law," not "daughter-in-laws." That might be a rule for a different holiday (perhaps there's a National Accurate Pluralization Day?), but we figured we'd mention it just in case.

- Pluralizing a family name. We have driven by countless mailboxes that say "The Smith's" or something similar. If they're trying to express that the mailbox is the property of The Smith, then the apostrophe usage is correct. If, on the other hand, they're trying to indicate that multiple Smiths reside at that address, then just "The Smiths" is sufficient. No apostrophe needed.

Russian financier Andrei Vavilov sued the hotel, developers El-Ad Properties and brokers Stribling & Associates this month for breach of contract, fraud, deceptive trade practices and negligence. Vavilov, who said he made the purchase based on a video, claimed that the apartment -- actually two separate penthouses built on top of the Plaza -- has small windows, low ceilings, obstructed views and ugly drainage grates.

But in a counter lawsuit filed on Wednesday in New York State Supreme Court, El-Ad Properties accused Vavilov of libel and filing a "sham" lawsuit. It is seeking $36 million in damages.

"These false and defamatory statements were made ... solely in an attempt to escape the unconditional obligation to purchase such condominium apartments," the El-Ad lawsuit said.

Vavilov and his wife, the Russian actress Maryana Tsaregradskaya, were concerned the penthouses were not large enough, it said.

Almost three days after the storm steamrolled the coast, the extent of the damage was still coming into focus, with rescue teams finally reaching some of the hardest-hit and most inacessible places, including Bolivar Peninsula, a resort on Galveston Bay where entire neighborhoods were obliterated.

While the number of confirmed deaths was still remarkably low at 37 in Texas and eight other states, the distress was considerable.

Nearly 37,000 people were in shelters in Texas, and there was no word on when those living in the most devastated towns, such as Galveston, might return. An estimated 2.2 million people in Texas alone remained without power. Many service stations had no gasoline, or no electricity to pump it. With no running water, some residents were dumping toilet waste directly into the sewers. Major highways were still under water.

Victims grew irritable as they waited for food and water. Some relief stations ran out of supplies, leaving thousands hungry and panicked.

Lines of cars stretched two hours or longer at Texas Southern University for packages of bottled water and bags of ice, the only supplies on hand until three 18-wheelers showed up around noon.
